Role Overview

As Second Captain (2nd Captain) on board a Viking River vessel, you support the Captain in the safe and efficient operation of the ship. You ensure safe navigation, operational excellence, and a high-quality guest experience in full compliance with applicable statutory regulations. You report directly to the 1st Captain.

Your Responsibilities

Safety & Operation

  • Overall responsibility for onboard safety when delegated, including safety drills and familiarization with all safety procedures.
  • Act as the Captain’s representative when required.
  • Navigate independently on assigned stretches according to regulations, timetables, and lock schedules to avoid incidents or delays.
  • Ensure cost-conscious use of all energy resources (fuel, lubricants, etc.).

Administration & Documentation

  • Handle required administrative processes and ensure timely submission of all mandatory reports.
  • Verify that all required patents and certificates for the route are onboard and that crew qualification documents comply with regulations.

Crew & Training

  • Train and mentor junior officers, trainees, and crew members.
  • Participate in regular meetings, onboard training sessions, and company-mandated courses.

Your Profile

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as second captain or "Stuurman met Vaarbewijs"
  • Independent, flexible, decisive, and assertive
  • Strong team player, capable of motivating crew
  • Ambitious, proactive, and eager to learn
  • Good English language skills
  • Strong interest in further training (certificates, language skills, navigational licenses)

  • Rhine Patent to Mainz (km 1000–493)
  • VHF
  • Radar
  • Safety Expert (Sachkunde)
  • Languages: German & English required; Dutch & French are a plus

Danube

  • Vaarbewijs
  • Danube Patent from Sulina to Regensburg (km 0–2370)
  • VHF
  • Radar
  • Safety Expert (Sachkunde)
  • Languages: German & English required; Russian is a plus

Rhine – Main – Danube

  • Vaarbewijs
  • Rhine Patent to Mainz

France
